Grum at Fairlight Club in Vienna
On October 29 one of our favorite producers and previous Kunk guest, Grum, will be hitting the new Fairlight Club for what promises to be a super fun set. Fairlight started up recently with a night featuring Futurecop and seems to be right up our alley stylistically. Hopefully i’ll also be catching the night in person. Those in the area (including myself) should hit Vienna that night!

Kunk Mix - End of Summer 2011
Republishing ourselves on Tumblr, for no real reason other than to kick ourselves in the butt. Let’s get things rolling with Kunk’s End of Summer 2011 Mix Kunk End of Summer 2011 Mix by kunk

Re-Invigoration
On account of a variety of factors, not least of which is an upcoming lil’ Kunk appearance on the super awesome Fear of Tigers podcast, we’ll soon be re-animating ourselves in a slightly different format. One which should engender a great post frequency than what we’ve seen lately here at the ole mykunk. So keep your browsers at the ready. In the meantime, here’s a recent remix of...

Justin Faust Top 10 for 2010
Now the following post is one in which the Kunkers have ceded their ‘journalistic integrity’ in order to allow our good friend and Bavarian synth-disco producer extraordinaire, Justin Faust, take over the steering wheel and post his top 10 for 2010. It’s a Kunk exclusive and hopefully will serve as an inspiration point for us to get off our duffs and back on the posting train....

ULTRNX and Saint Pauli
Some mega-heaviness just came our way via the soundclouds today. Both ULTRNX and Saint Pauli hail from Germany; the latter first popped up on our radar after their mixes for Cryptonites and Dirty Disco Youth last year. Fast forward to now, and this Saint Pauli remix of Rockstr is blowing us away. I guess if it was 2007 i’d call it a ‘banger’, but these days i think you can...

Tensnake & Treasure Fingers
So Tensnake has been rocking through Brandon’s posts, and I guessed now that we received a Treasure Fingers remix of “Coma Cat”, it’s time I joined and jumped on the bandwagon. Since summer’s dying, it’s nice to have these tracks that get you ready for club season. Treasure Fingers added some extra disco and pumping to the original tropico-balearia. The main...

Xinobi & Lazydisco
Couple days ago, Xinobi sent over his new track. It’s a serious piece of work: it’s creepy and laid-back, it’s Knight Rider and a cheesy horror movie about ghosts, it gives you the funk and the atmosphere. All this at the same time. Brilliant dynamic and the jingling keys and main synths are awesome. “Japanese” has a subtle but really powerful force behind it that...

Human Life
LA-based Human Life has recently set loose the intriguingly-titled Italo Crimewave, which sounds to me like short documentary following the Crystal Castles duo as they dress up in mafia gear and do dj sets at Sicilian house parties featuring dubious Eddy Huntington tracks. But I digress. In reality the track doesn’t venture far from the aesthetic of its title, and we’re fine with...

If You Want Me, Let Me Go
There was only one bigger problem with The xx’s debut album last year, namely that there were no danceable songs. I mean of course, their concept is far from dance music but the huge hype and success make fans crave for club stuff, I guess. Kinda proves my point that there are many remixes floating out there, so producers also feel the need to tackle The xx’s anti-club atmosphere....

You Own My Heart
I was really really hoping that Portland’s The Thermals return with an awesome album because the previous album, Now We Can See was kinda a disappointment. In September, 2010, they are gonna release Personal Life, their fifth LP. I can’t totally communicate how happy I am that this record turned out to be awesome. The official press release says that, as the title suggests, this album...

Blamma!Blamma! and Stevie Nicks
A little nostalgia here for Kunk as our very first foreign guest act way back in early 2008 was indeed the boys of Blamma!Blamma!. Very cool pair, super nice, and great live set. Since that time the Blammas suffered the unthinkable: one of their members passed away. In the loving memory of Martin, a little while back, Nick released some of the tracks they had been working on. One of which...

Aeroplane & Lights
Just got an awesome mail about a pretty highly bloggable remix. Aeroplane used to be a duo but they had split and Vito De Luca (who’s still Aeroplane) reworked Chromeo’s new single, “Don’t Turn the Lights On”. Fun fact: both acts played/gonna play this years Hungarian festivals. Chromeo was at Balaton Sound, Aeroplane is gonna be at the Sziget, Meduza stage on...

Mutantek's Psycho Disco
Couple days ago we’ve received a nice mail from Mutantek, an awesome producer from Mexico. What caught my attention is that he tackled The Talking Heads, their classic “Psycho Killer”. One might consider this an act of desecration, we at Kunk hq quite enjoy it. It became a cool, chopped and weird disco track. Love his Minitel Rose and Kavinsky reworks as well. The beat gets you...

Clockwork, Time after Time
Regular readers of this blog will know we’re big fans of the ‘homie outta LA’, Clockwork. Regular attendees of our Budapest gigs will also know what we’ve been dropping a lot of his stuff in sets of late. Here are a pair which aren’t brand new, but which we’re fond of. The first, with a lil’ help from a Deadmau5 sample, re-tools the hiphop mega-collab...

Wild Nothing
One of my favourite albums of this year is Wild Nothing’s Gemini. It’s a gorgeous indie/dream-pop record that’s gazing at clouds instead of shoes. Of course, it’s very easy to see through the influences from My Bloody Valentine to The Cure and treat Jack Tatum’s project as a revivalist ‘nothing-new’ hipster something. However, I think there’s some...

LightsoverLA
I’m going to celebrate our new, beautiful blog with a semi-comprehensive post about LightsoverLA since their remixes already appeared in our mixes and we love the shit out of them. I kinda don’t know anything about them him, except that they are a duo and he hails from Phoenix/(obviously)LA. For personal stuff (being in metal band, sandwiches, death of music industry and movies) check...

Hello World, Part Two: Ch Ch Changes…
After 500 posts and a little spring/summer relaxation, we figured what better way to get reinvigorated with the blog, than to spruce it up a bit. Hope you like the changes. Comments will be enabled in another week or so. Stay tuned for a week of posts with our ‘BFFs’. In honor of the new look and feel, could there be any other possible song to share? We also didn’t think...

Grum + Russ Chimes Drop Twin Nuggets of...
Those residing at the address of ‘Under a Rock’ are likely the only ones not to have taken fond notice of two stellar vids dropping into the interwebsphere of late. The first was for Grum’s new single, Through the Night. It’s an 80s-styled buddy cop bromance-a-thon. Cars are washed, asses are patted, hugs are had. And in the end, fittingly, pecs are flexed. We’re...

Death to the Throne
Was making the mix a while ago and stumbled upon this remix by Death to the Throne who hails from Phoenix. He remade The xx’s “Shelter” and I was quite happy about it since most xx songs are undanceable. However, The xx is a good band and their songs deserve to be heard out loud and not just at their gigs. The Death to the Throne remix is very nicely done with a lot of...

Kunk Mixtape: Spring/Summer 2010
So you should know by now that Kunk is not so enthusiastic about the technical aspects of djing and music promotion but we like to keep things personal. The same is true for our mixes: a Kunk mix is much more about the great tracks and remixes inside it than about our ability to mix them together. Of course, there are a couple moments that should appeal to anyone I guess. On this note, you can...

Acid Washed Remixed Kelis
We’ve already blogged about Acid Washed, Paris-based chill-space maestros. This time they return with a take on Kelis, the rnb princess. As Kunk loves a good mix of genres, we were naturally curious about what can be accomplished here. You might expect, after the trippy and umm “acid-y” single, “Change”, this remix stays on this end of the scale. Of course,...

Larry Tee: Party, Interview
Kunkers are still in recovery mode after last weekend’s shenanigans — however, no rest for the wicked as we’ve got quite the barnburner coming up this April 30, at Merlin, presented together with our mates, Kollektiva. Joining us in Budapest will be no less than the so-called ‘Andy Warhol of dance music’ and godfather of all things filthy, dirty, and electro: Larry...

New Thieves Like Us
Perpetual Kunk faves Thieves Like Us new album (Again and Again) is coming out next month. You previously saw and heard the Never Known Love single here not too long ago… next up is Forget Me Not, which is naturally accompanied by its own remix package. KOLT13 Blunts It with Slo-Mo Epic Trance
We first dropped some KOLT13 love last summer and it’s long overdue to revisit what’s been happening with the French producer. Specifically in fact: Love at the Speed of Light — with which we’re definitely getting vibes of Symbol One’s Love Juice Danger remix (perhaps after enough juice one reaches the speed of light?) and it all lines up famously with the vocals. ...

Acid Washed — It’s Trippy
Acid Washed is some trippy, er, acid-influenced sounding comsic-disco coming from a pair out of Paris. Change meanders along a path which evokes a moment you might have in Ibiza after that fast stuff has started to wear off, but the slow stuff is starting to kick-in (yes, it’s a thinly veiled drug reference). Their tracks are generated from both vintage as well as modern equipment, and that...

Despite Impending Summer: In a Miike Snow Mood
This isn’t material that’s exactly hot of the presses, however i’ve been in a Miike Snow mood of late. The Swedish/American trio with the solo artist-sounding name remain one of the freshest sounding things going nearly one year on from their self-titled first release. Perhaps not surprisingly, to my ears their sound is not so far removed from another trio consisting of two...

Open Up The Gates and Show Me to the Promised Land
“Yeah we were born free // can’t you see? // it’s our destiny” - bursts the chorus of a hip and new NYC band, The Rassle. Not sure if this means the end of The Young Lords and/or The Virgins, since it’s composed of their members, but if it does, it is a cool, phoenix-like rise from the ashes. They’ve just launched their new EP which is a free download and was...

Punches is a new outfit out of Brooklyn comprising Finger on the Pulse, Alan Astor and The Kid Rob… the three of whom wanted to ‘punch’ out a new sound for summer. To kick-off this venture, they’ve crafted an ear catching mixtape containing an ear catching remix of the wistful Only You Can Make You Happy, by muses to many, Au Revoir Simone. You’ll recognize the...

Haezer: Definitely Not His Fault
At kunk we loves us some, er, gay nu happy disco, however at times it can leave you yearning for something with a bit more fist pumping danceable rage behind it (couldn’t agree more with Trashbags). The challenge, at least to our ears, is accomplishing that sound without descending into a wobbly un-melodic seizure-inducing mess, as so frequently happens these days by the ableton nation. I...

NightWaves: Pretty Damn Sweet, Indeed
Readers of this blog will of course be aware of the Nightwaves/Binary crew. We’ve just fallen a little bit in love with their recent song and accompanying video, Sweet Carrie. We Have Schaatz
We did our first long overdue post on Schaatz a few months ago, and on the back of their recent effort which came our way, the time has come again. They’ve hit us up with a fun, rolling ‘lil remix of We Have Band’s Divisive. The Paris-duo softened the tone of the original and added some of that coastal vibe which they have worked quite well, to date. The end result is not a...

The Bearable Lightness of Clancy
By way of twitter, we were sent a snazzy mixtape last week, followed by a snazzy Delphic remix, by Clancy. Don’t know a great deal of more info other than he’s coming out of the UK, has got spot on taste in music, and bringing some early nice returns on his edits. The Halcyon remix is a fantastic light (but not lightweight) electro romp which shows great promise, at least to our biased...

Xinobi: Interview. Party.
We Kunkers are of course super excited about this weekend’s party with the excellent Xinobi, coming all the way from southwest Europe’s stunning enclave of Portugal. For those who are music blog lovers but also simultaneously living under a rock, Xinobi is one of...

She Was Never Pretty She Was Only Young
So i’m kinda insanely addicted (if it’s possible to be ‘kinda’ that sort of thing) to this poney poney 2.0, aka Jamaica, track. I know i know, it’s getting the serious high-profile production-over and video love from the ed banger crew and all that — nevertheless, when Rick Springfield is being channeled, as is happening so profoundly in this case, i jump to...

Bestrack Hits the Love
Michele Balduzzi aka Phonat have not yet received the proper amount of love he’d deserve from Kunk. He’s an Italian producer and seems that he’s right up in our alley with his uplifting choppy electro house. This time with “Love Hits the Fan” and it’s super-visual video, he’s no doubt on top of many charts. On the other side of the remixing game now is...

Friday: Mount Eerie and No Kids
So there are many cool events happening around Budapest these days. In fact, this weekend is gonna be one of the coolests. On friday, the Lamantin guys host a party with Mount Eerie (whose 2008 album with Julie Doiron made it into Kunk’s bests) and No Kids. Mount Eerie is touring their last LP, Wind’s Poem which is haunting dream with such a desperate voice failing to hold on to...

Overthrilled
Overthrill just shared a few new tunes and they are splendid to our ears. The first by the German duo is called Brahma — with that title you can surmise it’s got a little Indian subcontinent vibe going — and indeed you’d be right. A moody intro gets followed by a lil’ epic synthi-ness which later gets amended by vampiric-flavored bollywood beats. Altogether, a dark...

Fear of Tigers and Monsieur Adi
Two things we like: Fear of Tigers, and Monseiur Adi. Fittingly, together they pack a delightful punch. Well, perhaps in this case not a punch so much as a blissful repose. Nevertheless, this M. Adi slowdown of the urgent original, I Can Make the Pain Disappear, totally succeeds. Thoughtful, however not melancholic, strings create the back-fabric of the track, which feels as if it’s...

Thinking Machines
I’ve recently discovered Philadelphia-based indie rockers who go by the name Thinking Machines (probably got the name from Dune). I’ve instantly fell in love with their new album, Work Tapes. They play the kind of music inspired by Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Guided by Voices and other giants of American indie. This means heavy and screaming guitar noise, disharmonic feel, creative drum...

Justin Faust, Silk Cocoons, and Montauk
On the upstart Brilliantine label via amaxing.fm is a track by Sweden’s Montauk, Holiday. Among that single collection is a pretty rad remix by fave of Kunk, and party guest last month, Justin Bieber Faust. We’re consistently pleased with Faust’s admission that he ‘leaves the banger-making for others’, since this track makes no apologies in continuing his tradition of...

Russ Chimes Not Vanished Yet
Another Russ Chimes edit is floating its way across the internets, this time done of Hold On by upstarts, The Vanish. This time around, Chimes keeps it pretty smooth-edged from start to finish, and refrains from unleashing the megadrop which signatures/headlines many of his edits, including the recent Elle Goulding mix. Which, however, is all the finer, cos if you release the beast every single...

MMM Calls It a Night
Despite the whole fading of Ed Banger’s glory, Kavinsky’s new EP is already under pretty heavy rain of hype. The heavyweights of French house are collaborating to make Pacific Coast Highway a super-product: mixed by SebastiAn, Nightcall produced by half of The Daft Punks…so it’s hardcore. If we add that this track even features CSS’s Lovefoxxx with vocals then no one...

Short Circuit Has Beaten It
Brandon is my witness, I can be quite a purist when it comes to remixing and covering classics. This doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate the taste and the effort, I just think it’s really hard to adequately touch a classic. On the other hand, I’m all for pop and easygoing stuff, still, it’s hard to be easygoing. Binary’s Short Circuit went for a huge fish with...

The Plants Continue to Be Plural, and Happy
We’ve done quite a few previous posts on We Plants Are Happy Plants, and understandably so: first, as he’s producing soaring electro dance-ish tracks that are quite easy on our ears; and second, because he’s a Hungarian, sharing a home base with the Kunkers. Twilight of the Dawn builds up with a trance-hazed pastoral landscape, and sends you out to memory bliss, before gently...

Redial Recharged
Not that his battery was ever low, but Aussie-land’s epic-synth magician returns with two such remixes that are superheavyweight dancefloor-destroyers. The older one is Barretso’s “We Won’t Stop” which - as everyone notices - is synth car-race in the Russ Chimes-esque vein. Redial here adds his heavy drumming and own synth-banging to make it a great instance of...

Rockets
Just got a lil’ shout from Rockets about their remix of a Butterfly Bones track called Crystal Cave. The timing of the mail was particularly apt, as later this month, Kunk will host another from the Discotexas crew of which Rockets is part — in this case Xinobi. Quite enjoying the latest remix from Fear of Tigers emerging from the Neon Gold camp. It’s an energetic and happy romp across plateaus of layered electro and surges of tidal thumping beats.  It will build you up, it will push you forward, and it will keyboard cat (keyboard tiger?) you into sublime submission. The track will be released as part of a Yes Giantess remix package that marks a...
